This class is for beginning and intermediate writers who wish to freelance for community newspapers, national magazines, or professional journals. In this accelerated class, we'll discuss the nuts and bolts of how, when, and where to submit work; what a query letter is and how to write one; ways to reduce rejection; how to track submissions, develop a niche, and stay on task. Students will learn to speak editors' language and the basics of copyright. Writing exercises will be given primarily as homework assignments and students will draft a query letter, article (or two), and column packet if desired. The instructor will critique up to three pieces from each student and will be available for brief consultations. (Small copy fee for handouts.)
